Literal interpretations of nautical design often turn out very tacky. Hanging a boat wheel up on the wall, using anchor print pillows or displaying your best collection of seashells does not necessarily translate into a coastal inspired space. When careful attention is paid to fabrics, paint colours, wood types, window treatments and accessories, you can easily create a very beachy look without all the gimmicks.
Case and Point: The Concord Green Home. By keeping the colour palette white and by incorporating soft linens, a slip covered sofa + dining chairs, weathered driftwood and pale blue accent pillows, the designer (Lisa Kauffman Tharp) has created a house that she describes as being "Coastal with SoHo loft sensibilities". Mission accomplished, I couldn't agree more!
